What Would Jobs Do?

Posted on January 22, 2010 by Jeremy Toeman

If you follow gadgets or new tech and you are not aware that Apple is introducing “something” next Wednesday, you are either (1) my wife or mother or (2) awaking from a long long sleep. Now along with virtually anything Apple does, or contemplates doing, or doesn’t contemplate doing but others contemplate on their behalf,

Technology Predictions for 2010

Posted on January 4, 2010 by Jeremy Toeman

Every year I predict, every year I get at least one thing right. And many wrong.  But that’s the fun part, right?  This year instead of categorizing based on the technology area, I’m going to organize based on my own scale of how crazy the prediction itself is… The No-Brainers Stuff that is almost definitely

The Third Age of Gadgets nears its end

Posted on December 28, 2009 by Jeremy Toeman

The iPad TabletMac MacTouch iSlate will supposedly launch next year, and with it comes the end of an era.  For that statement to make any sense, I should probably backtrack a bit and give a little explanation.  While considering the impact of this product (should it even exist beyond the labs in Cupertino, that is),

Our new Disclosures policy (plus some commentary)

Posted on October 9, 2009 by Jeremy Toeman

In an interesting move, the FTC has created a seemingly arbitrary set of guidelines that apply to “the bloggers” and “facebooking” and how they disclose paid-for-posts (PDF file with the actual guidelines are here).  I call it arbitrary because, well, it is, but I actually applaud the concept – just not the execution.  I agree

Auditing my technology dependencies

Posted on July 21, 2009 by Jeremy Toeman

I am in the process of signing up for Google Voice (my number ends with CALLJT, now how cool is that??) and had this minor freak-out moment realizing how much I depend on Google.  So I got to thinking about all the places where I really do rely on tech for my day-to-day living. I

More Thoughts on Ethics

Posted on July 17, 2009 by Jeremy Toeman

I blogged about “twittergate” yesterday, and it seems like the topic of “was this ethical” continues to rear its head across blogs and publications. LewisPR put up a poll asking “Was TechCrunch right to publish Twitter’s business plans?” – the overwhelming majority as I write this says “no”.  So this post is dedicated to all

Scoring my 2008 Tech Predictions

Posted on December 27, 2008 by Jeremy Toeman

I’m about the least unopinionated guy I know.  362 days ago, I made a whole bunch of predictions.  Let’s see how I scored… TV Technology Every major cable company will increase it’s rates by more than 3%. Nobody will complain, and our government will (again) fail to protect us from them.  — Well, I don’t

Internal Memo Leaked: Apple to Close Business on Tuesday

Posted on September 7, 2008 by Jeremy Toeman

In an incredibly rare “scoop” I received an email from an anonymous Apple employee who shared an internal memo with me. Here are the contents (name withheld by request): To All Apple Employees: After 12 great years back at Apple, I’ve come to make an important decision about the future of the business. With great

Computing and the Innovator's Dilemma

Posted on June 24, 2008 by Jeremy Toeman

If you haven’t yet read the Innovator’s Dilemma, and you are involved in startups or high tech in general, I urge you to find a copy and get familiar with the concepts (here’s a summary at Wikipedia).  In a nutshell, the theory states that there are moments in business when following all the “correct” or

MacBooks are both trendy and good

Posted on March 17, 2008 by Jeremy Toeman

My friend Mark Evans wrote a blog post today entitled “Are MacBooks Just Trendy?” and I thought I’d write a completely unwarranted perspective myself. In his article, Mark ponders the value of the budget laptop buyer, who can pick up a lower-end Windows laptop for ~$500. He continues with… Before the MacNation starts clamoring about

Apple plays the speeds and feeds game

Posted on February 26, 2008 by Jeremy Toeman

Apple’s (disclosure: I own AAPL stock) long-awaited MacBook and MacBook Pro revisions were announced today, and surprised many by simply making upgrades.  While I’d have loved to have seen a whole new lineup of laptops, the reality is this move made a lot of sense for the company.  First, let’s not be so quick to

Apple/MS: please fix installations!

Posted on January 26, 2008 by Jeremy Toeman

It’s unbelievable to me that in this day and age it’s still so ridiculously difficult to install things. Hardware, software, drivers, whatever. Is it easier with my Mac than it was with Windows? Sure. Especially relative to my Sony Vaio, which, (say it along with me people), is the most terrible laptop you can buy.
