It has been some time since I have written. But now that I’m settled on the east coast, with somewhat reliable Internet, I’ll try and keep in touch more often. In light of recent disaster news I thought I’d make my first return post a little more light and fuzzy.
I came across a good discussion of online dating as the third sexual revolution in America and the notion sparked interest and discussion in my new house.
The first sexual revolution came in the 1920’s right as the automobile provided a new portable make-out spot for all the vets coming home from WWI. It was also a time when women were starting to get more rights. The second revolution was, of course, in the 60’s as free love and sex was rampant throughout the nation’s youth.
But what is this third sexual revolution? Does it really involve more sex, or just a different means of perusing the ever present libidinal desires we all have. More importantly, both previous sexual revolutions have produced negative consequences in the aftermath. AIDS is the most obvious. These negative consequences never show themselves right away, but are discovered further down the line. What does online dating have in store for us.
It really is amazing the amount of online dating that is occurring right now and how targeted they are. There is an online dating service for almost every demographic. Even sites that are meant for social networking have become dating sites in disguise.
It’s just another way in which technology is doing more than giving us new ways to get jobs and play video games. It also is playing a part in the classic story of boy meets girl.
