The laser was invented in 1958, but CD players, laser pointers, and hair removal took a few decades before the laser was implemented into these world changing inventions. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is not on the exact same timeline, but there are global impacting inventions popping up with the RFID technology.
Peter Monahan decided to create an RFID system for the home after a pool party disaster that almost left him with one less child. Three year old Kyle slipped and fell into the swimming pool.
Everyone has misplaced their keys, a remote control, mobile phone, wallet, lucky pen, etc. Two minutes into the search people will normally say “I wish I just had a button I could push and it’d tell me where my keys are.” Monahan did just that, but he’s got more than just his keys in mind.
RFID has been in the news pertaining to JFK airport and vehicle identification. Moving that technology from a huge industry level, down to an individual’s household, at a reasonable price, was thought to be much harder than Peter found out.
Peter has made a home RFID kit for $479.99, and yes I have the decimal in the right place. The RFID tags are $20.00 a pop.
This system can be integrated into your home to do far more than save your child from drowning in the backyard pool (as if that’s not worth your $500.00). I emailed Peter and asked him what he personally uses the RFID system for.
I presently use RFID for:
Controlling Lights in my home to my liking based upon my unique RFID
Controlling HVAC and room temperature in my home to my liking based upon my
unique RFID
Setting Music based upon RFID Presence, and time of day, day of week
Determine when Children leave in Morning and arrive home safely from school
Detect our family vehicles to automatically open and close appropriate
garage doors and turn on outdoor lights.
Determine that mail has been delivered
Access control of entry door (auto-unlock)
Control Security System if My Car and My Tag are both detected
Restrict Internet and Gaming Access unless My Wife or I am home
