Reviewed: Pocket Prep for the SAT

Posted on September 18, 2005 by feeling entropy

I took the ETS PSAT (Pre-SAT) in 1995, then on to the real deal in 1996. My parents weren’t satisfied with the first score I got. The Princeton Review class they then signed me up for cost us $450.00. Meeting each Monday night in order to learn words like ‘perspicacious’ seemed to be their remedy to my poor verbal skills. Then I tried to give the SAT’s a good ol’ butt whipping in round two. Maybe a firm tap, needless to say, I did get into college.

Franklin and the Princeton Review got together and solved my SAT study problem. (Time to exult.) The Pocket Prep for the SAT tries to fulfill the need to buy electronic gadgets, yet feel productive at the same time. You know kids these days, if it doesn’t have batteries, a screen, and buttons, then it can’t be cool.

The unit comes with a durable Franklin carrying case, pencil, graph paper, quick reference card (for math equations and navigation tips for the unit), and the actual handset. Batteries are included, and I assume that they’ll last quite a while, as the screen isn’t color, nor is it backlit, and there is no audio.

With buttons A-E on the left hand side (used for multiple choice questions as well as other functions) and general navigation buttons on the right hand side, the study gizmo presents a nice large black and white LCD screen. A color screen on this unit would drive cost thru the roof and suck battery juice like a baby on a bottle. Hardware wise, I was not impressed by the navigation button. An up-down-left-right-select button is your primary means to navigation, but its quality is a hapless result of price-cutting. Continue reading →

Carputer: PC + Auto

Posted on September 14, 2005 by feeling entropy

There are two kinds of people in this world. There are the pioneers who have a vision of the future and with hard work, make their dream a reality. Then there are the followers. Those who sit back and make fun of the pioneers for being nerds, or geeks, or losers.

Just because you’re always busy working on a PC that will go into your 1985 Nissan Sentra, and haven’t had a girlfriend in 4 solid years, doesn’t justify a constant teasing from the latter kinds of people in this world. Those people are pushing the automotive entertainment and productivity markets of tomorrow. Car PC’s, carputers, car computers, and mobile minis (mac minis in cars) are taking the car owning geek population by storm.

Mp3 playback, GPS, Bluetooth/WiFi internet connectivity, redefining wardriving, DVD playback, and everything else that you wish to come true at night is available on a car PC. Extremetech.com did a quick scan over about the basics of this new emerging geek fad. I’m personally in the works on a car PC myself, and have been using Mp3Car.com religiously, there are plenty of other forums out there as well. I’m warning you to keep watching these pioneers, we’re on to something.

eBay is in the Buying Mood

Posted on September 12, 2005 by feeling entropy

It’s all coming into view for me. Before PayPal, eBay transactions took weeks, for a check to be delivered via snail mail, and wait then for the item to be snail mailed back. PayPal cut one of those postal pains by allowing an instantaneous money transfer. eBay should have done something like that themselves. Instead of kicking their own backsides, they decided to investigate the next best thing, Skype. Instead of emailing questions to sellers and waiting for their response, is just calling them up and chatting VoIP style.

eBay probably saw a bit more potential in Skype than a better auction site, but I’d like to call and make sure that Britteny Spears really did take a bite of that $12,598.78 piece of toast I just bid on.

PlayPal And SomethingAwful.com

Posted on September 6, 2005 by feeling entropy

Each day I watch a bit of news, and am in disbelief. Stars are flying their private jets out, and personally helping out with their own two hands. Oprah even fought her way into the superdome, where she was seen holding a filter over her nose and mouth. With things this bad, people need to help out. Our buddies over at PayPal aren’t doing a good job at that.

They froze the account of www.somethingawful.com, who raised almost $30K in 9 hours. This not only hindered the site to give the money to Red Cross, but also halted all other donations. In a time of need, PayPal sure was happy they didn’t startup business in New Orleans. Later, PayPal reps told Somethingawful that they needed to wait 3-5 business days, and that Red Cross could not accept the money, United Way was the only allowable donation party for PayPal.

Bad news on PayPal’s part. All (most of) the donations were refunded, to hopefully be donated. All this while people starve, dehydrate, and suffer. Way to go PayPal. Let’s hope SomethingAwful happens to PayPal, or at least smacks ‘em upside their dumb head.

Rockers For Rokr

Posted on September 4, 2005 by feeling entropy

My phone just doesn’t do enough for me: Call anywhere in the nation for free, instant messenging, web browsing via the GPRS network, pop email for three different accounts, games, downloadable ringtones, a comprehensive calendar, and more… I need a phone suit for Madonna, Iggy Pop, and Lil’ John. I need an Apple/Motorola phone. “Listening to my phone” is something that I want to embed into my vocabulary I can carry my iPod with me, but with an iPod and a phone in my front pocket, lots of girls think I’m just happy to see them.

Talk about combining a mobile phone and an mp3 player is older than the pyramids. Apple has been teasing us with their iTunes Motorola phone for months now. But this journalist has an idea that this next week, we’ll have some concrete information about the phone. With celebs set up to advertise the new Motorola Rokr (iTunes) phone, I’m anticipating much from Apple’s event next week.

“and then I saw her screen, now I’m a believer” Oh Mobiblu, I think I love you.

This iPod Shuffle killer has won me over, and I’ve never even met her in person. Less than 1 cubic inch in volume this baby packs a punch and bite like Mr. Tyson. OLCD display, 1GB, FM tuner, Clock, Li-Ion battery, and all at .63 oz, I can’t live without one.

Mobiblu keychains, earrings, appetizers, and dice are just a few of the many uses a new Mobiblu could bring to my life. If anyone on the planet really loves me, then they’d buy me the 1GB version. Let’s expand that to anyone in the galaxy. I can do without gas in my car, food in the fridge, and who pays water bills anyway… I need a Mobiblu!

Wireless After Katrina

Posted on August 30, 2005 by feeling entropy

My first thoughts after watching the news today was, how will they check their email?! T-Mobile decided to step in and do something about the horrible situation under water. Free phones? No. Free Wifi? Yes! Although there’s tons of places that already give free WiFi access to people who aren’t up to their attics in water, T-Mobile has decided to be a good samaritan. It’s a step in the right direction, maybe in the near future people with skinned knees and sprained ankles will get a day of free WiFi compliments of T-Mobile.

Nothing like checking your email while your house is under water, heck, you know I’d be doing it!!

One Hour Photo, Online. Fishy

Posted on August 30, 2005 by feeling entropy

Before you say, it can’t be done, it has been. Walgreens and Snapfish have joined forces to bring all of your one hour online photo needs together. HP’s Snapfish was chosen by the green walled super store last month to represent their photos on the web, and now the favor has been returned. Just hit the “pick up” option when Snapfishing pictures, and with a zip code, you are directed to your closest Walgreens for pick up of your photos. I can’t wait to fill those spray paint and macaroni picture frames that I learned how to make in grade school, and in just one hour!

But then again, digital photos aren’t developed. Is it that much of a difference taking a memory card in to Walgreens or emailing them pics via Snapfish. There’s something (Snap)fishy going on here.

Word Up Blogger

Posted on August 26, 2005 by feeling entropy

It’s old news. But I’m an old guy. Blogger and Microsoft Word have come together at last. Everything I blog about needs to be spell checked or else there will be lots of ‘taht’ ‘nwo’ and ‘ehre’ throughout my writings. I’m not a bad speller, just a bad typist. Regardless, Blogger (a div. of Google) has a neato plugin that allows you to compose, and then post from the same word editor we all use, love, hate, and rely on. I chalk this up as plus one for the home team. Let’s get to blogging, Word style.

Ghostbusting Laptops

Posted on August 25, 2005 by feeling entropy

When the movie Ghostbusters came out, I needed one of those proton packs that Peter Venkman looked so cool in. Although “we ain’t afraid of no ghosts”, I do work an 8-hour day, sometimes via laptop. My laptop battery gets more care and pampering than a billionaire’s poodle, but still can’t perform for one full work day. I suppose I could flash back to 1984 and strap a big battery on my back, impersonating the Ghostbusters, in order to attain an unplugged work day from my notebook. But the Ghostbusters isn’t hip anymore, and neither is staying plugged in. my vote was to shorten the work day in order to accommodate the 4-hour notebook battery life, that idea was shot down by Intel and Matsushita. These two are working on the remedy: a laptop battery that can last as long as you can.

Dr. Peter Venkman: “Why worry? Each one of us is carrying an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back.”

Microsoft to Google

Posted on August 24, 2005 by feeling entropy

Even pc users will snicker at the name Bill Gates. Why is this man, who’s opened up many of the closed ‘windows’ we PC users rely on, deemed evil? Microsoft is more similar to the king evil tyrant of computers than the president of computers, and this king rules with a silicon fist. Microsoft this, Microsoft that, well wait… someone else is coming in from the horizon.

Google, who launched a chat/IM client today, is being accused of taking the spot that Microsoft has stood in for so many years. Is Google the next Microsoft? What about this Intel & Apple marriage? Where is the computer world that we know, love, and hate going?

Being Aware, Each Month

Posted on August 19, 2005 by feeling entropy

I celebrated Math awareness month (I’m an April baby), Breast Cancer Awareness month, AIDS awareness month, and Black awareness month… Maxtor has created an awareness month that really hits home however: Backup Awareness month. With 5 easy steps, and ”A photographer’s dream: pushing one button to protect his images”, how can we not all jump in and save our data?

They’re giving away a free hard drive each day just for those redundant copy impaired folks who just may lose all their precious data at any time. There’s only one problem with this, Backup Awareness month was June. I suppose I’m not such an avid fan of awareness months. Next year, things will be different.
